Easy on asserting that I am cruel to MGs. This car had been sitting for
about 11 years until I purchased and started resurrecting it in September. I
have already gone through most of the major systems, rebuilding, replacing
and repairing. And now I am on to some of the smaller chores (well I still
need to redo most of the suspension). And obviously I am interested in doing
a 'proper job', or I would not have asked the question.

If the mechanism is gummed-up with old grease and dirt then
just lithium grease may take a while to penetrate and ease
things. There may also be mechanical wear or distortion that
is causing it, in both lock and window. I would clean and
investigate the linkages, look for stiffness and any mechanical
causes, correct that and then lubricate. You admit that you
ignored growing stiffness until something broke, that is
cruelty to MGs. Do a proper job now.
