Randy,

I offer this advice to ANYONE attempting to install new harnesses or trace
electrical gremlins:

Before you even start, disconnect or don't even install the battery. Then,
after you think you have the harness hooked up, use a simple battery charger
in place of the battery. Use one that has a built-in circuit breaker and
which will put out around 10 - 15 Amps (nothing more).

Then if you DO have a short, the breaker on the charger will trip long
before you do any damage. You will, of course, not be able to test the
starter, but at that stage checking the starter should be last on your list.
Everything else will work fine and you'll be able to test without turning
your harness into a pile of smoking carbon.

Rick,

Since I bought my car the other year I have pulled out the old main wiring
harness because it had partially melted behind the dash. What I'm trying to
figure out is what it was that must have shorted out to cause this. After I
get my car painted this winter I'll be installing a new main harness and
would sure like to know how to look for & find what might have caused this
shorting out so it doesn't happen again. Therefore the more I can learn
about the electrical system on these cars the better.
