Bill,
It is very easy to avoid being taken. Just get his banker's cheque and go
winging down to your trusted bank and tell them the tale including your
fears of a scam. Get them to give you a notice to the effect that the
cheque has CLEARED !!!!!! - when and if it clears. Funnily enough, just
a half an hour ago I had a phone call from someone with a thick African
accent asking me to settle my VISA account. As I do not use VISA I was
immediately suspicious, more so when he asked to give him my VISA number so
he could check my claim that I had no bill to pay! I used a trace and got
his telephone number and reported it to the VISA people. It really is fun
these days - My neighbour fell for that email that claims to be a Microsoft
update but is really a virus email - took 4 days to fix her PC !!!!
