Water pump question and another

Hi List: First of all, thank you for all of the help lately as I contin ue to 
restore my son's B.

Now, as I am about ready to clean up and reinstall the original water pump, 
how can I know it is working before I install or do most of you just buy 
another?

Also, I am taking everyones advice and not hooking up the carbon/filter 
cannister. However, do I still need a vented gas cap if I leave the vent from 
the 
tank open. (This may be a dumb idea, so don't beat me up.)
