Bearings can be checked by grasping the top and bottom of the tyre (wheel
raised) and rocking the top in and the bottom out and vice-versa, there
should be perceptible play, but that can also reveal wear in the king-pin
and A-arm connections, someone else needs to get underneath to see what is
moving in relation to what. Clonks going from lock to lock IME have been
caused by loose/ovalled A-arm to stub axle connections. Again IME worn
bearing have made themselves known by squeaking, any looseness would surely
result in the wheel taking up a fixed camber, and imbalance in the wheels or
tyres would be causing the wobble, but I never noticed the effect of
applying the brakes when I had my out of balance tyres. Worn (loose)
track-rod ends could also cause a similar problem.
