Paul and Jeff, After cleaning the engine bay, I was drying the wiring when I noticed the high tension outlet of the coil was very badly corroded. So I installed the spare coil I had on hand. From then on the tach has worked perfectly. Just goes to show the problem isn't what you think it is. Again, thanks for your willingness to help.
