I bought a carpet set from www.britpartslocator.com. They'll make it out of
pile or loop; whichever you prefer and in whatever color. I haven't gotten it
yet to check the quality, but they have excellent eBay recommendations. I
don't see the advantage of the molded tranny cover. You're going to use a ten
dollar can of upholstery glue in other places, so might as well spray some on
the hump to put down jute under the non-molded carpet for the same effect.
The rest of the interior I'll sew myself (I'd do the carpet as well if I had a
pattern to work from to save time). Vinyl or leather seats in the desert are
not good, so I'm sewing cloth inserts for the seats from a nice grey material
normally used for Jeeps. Experience is seats would cost $100 to $130 each to
have sewn by someone locally, including materials... $120 in materials to do
both myself.
The kit sounds like a good deal if you need all those items. I don't, but will
still spend about $300 in materials; including the $140 carpet kit (with
shipping). Figure you need another $50 (or more) for spray glue between fabric
and foam as well as under the carpet. You'll probably also need paint for the
seat frames after cleaning all the rust off.

Subject: Carpet set recommendations

MGB roadster, and wonder if anyone can offer a
recommendation on where to get different kits,
particularly carpet sets...
There's a "deluxe" carpet kit from Moss Motors for
$373.00 that looks pretty sweet. Molded transmission
tunnel, etc. But at that price, by the time I get all
the rest of the pieces to do the interior, the total
cost will be fairly high.
Then there is a kit from Brit-Tek that includes
EVERYTHING. Carpet set, seat cushions and webbing,
seat upholstery, headrest covers, door panels, all
other trim panels, etc. and it's only $760.00 for the
whole shooting match.
Obviously, the Brit-Tek price is appealing but has
anyone ever used one? I assume it does not have a
molded transmission tunnel cover. Is this a big pain?
Will the results obtained by a hard-working but
amateur wrench like me be significantly different with
one kit or the other? Or is there another source that
might offer even a better price/quality compromise?
I want to save money, but not necessarily at the
expense of quality, because I want the end result to
be something I'm proud of. Any help would be
appreciated!
Thanks,
Paul
