Doug:

This is a common question.

Since the pump diaphragm is wanging in and out, dust tends to get sucked
into the coil and points areas. The later design pumps incorporated vents
that could be plumbed to areas of clean air. The later MGBs had short
lengths of windshield washer type tube that connected inside the trunk in a
tee, with the third leg allowing the pump to vent into the relatively clean
air in the trunk. It's easy to duplicate this setup, or just ignore the
vents.

The threaded bosses are for alternate mounting of the pump. In the MGB
application the pump is held by a ring mount around the body. This type of
pump can also be installed in cars like the MGA or Big Healey where the pump
is bolted to a rubber isolated mounting plate.
