Listers,
I finally had some time to spend on the 69C Saturday
and Sunday. I drained the rear and tranny replenishing
them with 90W in the rear and a new screen and 20W 50
in the tranny. Attached the ground wire to the body
of the battery box and slid the new battery in. With
help from my friend Mark, we checked the tork on the
head ( it was off on most studs by 10-20 lbs.) and
retightened to 75 lbs as suggested in manual. By the
way no blow by visible anywhere around the head.
Adjusted all the valves with 3 being closed and
needing the adjustment. Took the spark plugs out and
turned the key for the first time. Good and bad
things happened. Heater fan works, wipers work,
engine turned which means starter works(original) and
fuel pump ticked(new). We didn't have the carbs hooked
up. So we did a compression check. First time was
without lubing each cylinder. Called a Reg for
suggestions and he said to add 10 drops of oil to each
spark plug hole to lube cylinders. Either way the
compression came up Cyl 1- 80lbs, 2- 35, 3- 55, 4- 75,
5- 90, 6- 35. The book says compression should be 175
lbs. I would have been happy with 140-150 (-:
What is your best guess on what to expect. Now before
we tried this even with the plugs in, the crank was
moveable without a tool. Another words, we could turn
it by hand. So, maybe worn rings?
The speedo says 29,000 miles(can't verify if original
miles). Car has been in storage since 1975.
I'm going to pull the engine unless someone can tell
me how to change the rings without pulling the engine.
TIA
Jim
