well....though i've not touched the car since i wrote the question, i am
absolutely
certain it is the grounding wire (earth lead, 17H5531) inside the distributor..
i say that because i well remember the last time i saw it (summer 2002 as i
change out plug & coil wires, points, plugs, condenser, dizzy cap & rotor, etc)

wondered how many more times that little wire could flex prior to breaking
*completely*....
i'm SURE one or more strands have already broken (as another posted said)..
why i forgot completely about it, and didn't order a replacement i can't
explain....except maybe to say i'm no longer in my 20's...
if i learn i'm not right, i'll let you all know...
(yes, it might be some of the others, but i'm sure i recall that ground was
very
frayed and puny looking)
