Barrie:
What file format is the image in? I don't have a camera, but scan many
pictures. I use a program originally intended for a Logitech hand
scanner called FotoTouch Color. It handles TIFF (uncmpressed or
compressed), PCX, BPM, and JPEG files. You can copy, crop, reduce,
expand, change file format, deskew, edit the image (great for cleaning
up line drawings), etc. It's an old program but does what I need. I
sometimes use another program called IrfranView mainly to convert other
file formats, GIF mainly, so I can edit it with the FotoTouch. Both of
these I downloaded off the internet. FotoTouch Color was an update for
the B&W imaging system that came with the B&W hand scanner, and
IrfranView was/is a shareware/freeware program.
File sizes can be reduced by the file format, JPEG usually provides the
smallest, or by physically reducing the size of the image.
The only problem I can forsee is the resolution. I can also change the
resolution on the scan to get the file size down. AFAIK changing the
resolution of an existing file can't be done with either of these two
programs.
I save all scans as TIFFs, then after doing all of the editing necessary
save it again, and then save it also as a JPEG for internet use.
