You must live someplace like Florida where there really isn't a winter.
My two story house (with attached three stall garage) is heated by a force
air gas furnace and two wood fireplaces. On the bottom floor (basement and
garage), I use an efficient Blaze King fireplace insert to provide
supplemental heat and it typically goes through four cords of wood per
winter. I have already burned one cord just this past month. That heats the
basement and to some extent, the garage, if I leave the door between it and
the basement open. I'm thinking of putting a fan by the door to blow the
warm air in the garage to help as the door is normally closed. The garage
is heated through the same forced air heat from the gas furnace but it
typically only keeps the garage 20-30 degrees warmer than the outside,
which is a problem when temperatures are below zero (F) ouside.
Particularly on those brisk days when our high may only get up to ten below
because then its still below freezing in the garage.
So I have been following this thread with interest. Perhaps an additional
space heater in the garage. Or alternately, a better way to insulate the
garage. The two doors are of a wood slat variety so there are small cracks
between the slats and also at the point where the doors meet the floor (on
the ends).
Its not a big deal right now but I do spend less time in the garage when
its really cold outside.
