Well, as a temporary measure, a wooden clothes pin comes in handy. I have
also tried filing notches into the shaft to "catch" on the edge of the
bezel, with some success. Eventually I gave in and replaced it.

IME this is usually caused by POs that do not realize that the handle must
be rotated to "lock" and "unlock" it, and who just jam it in and yank it
out.
