Bill,

It's just common sense. When you replace a clutch you also replace the pressure 
plate and through-out bearing; change the oil and install a new oil filter; new 
brakes, bleed the system. And so on, and so on. If the splines on the wheels 
are worn those on the axles can't be too far behind. Some have told me that I 
go to extremes, at times, but when it comes to stopping the car it's better 
safe than sorry.

Mike,

You've hit on a very good point: when replacing wire wheels with new, you
really need new hubs as well, which roughly doubles the cost.
