I guess you mean the nipple, AKA Zerk fitting. You may need to raise
the car differently and/or reposition the shaft to gain access,
especially if you are wtiting about the front U-joint. You might check
to see if the U-joint was installed incorrectly. There's an indentation
in the housing to allow access to the fitting. The U-joint sometimes
gets rotated to the wrong position when it's replaced.
