I think those suicide knobs used to be popular in the 40s & 50's on domestic
cars. Steering wheels of that era had a ridiculous number of turns
lock-to-lock. It was faster to "crank" the steering wheel, rather than
"turn" it. I don't know if people actually used them driving, or if it was
just a parking aid. Anyway considering the dismal handling of those
dinosaurs, it was probably a good thing you couldn't turn the steering wheel
any faster.
