easy question?

Here is an easy question for someone. On the 1972 MGB, there is a 
commission number (or body number) plate mounted on the top of the dash, 
below the windshield mirror. The question today for someone - which way 
does the plate face? So it can be read from inside the car or from the 
outside (looking through the windshield)?
