Most likely a bad starter. If not before, probably now. As you push
started the car, the Bendex should have disengaged as soon as the engine
started. So if its a sticking Bendix its doing it quite frequently. Is
this the late 67 with the solonoid on starter, or an early one with a
separate solonoid?
When you directly connected the battery to the starter by bypassing the
starter solenoid the starter if good should have spun the engine. The
smoke probably indicates you had a direct short, most likely within the
starter.
