I wonder if the shaft that transfers power is not engaged up in the engine. We may have put the disk in backward and that is keeping the shaft from going all the way to engage. The motor did slip in without much trouble and that is where we were expecting trouble. We used the hand crank to turn the motor until it slipped in.
