Thanks to everyone for the advice on the air pump.
I took it off the car last night to see what was up - and the diagnosis;
catastrophic failure! One of the vanes and it's associated carbons had
shattered, shearing metal and god knows what into the pump. One of the
little thin metal leaf springs had wound up jamming between the housing and
the spinning cylinder. Hurrah. In the end i still needed to hook up the
hoses, so i cleaned all the crap out of the pump, reassembled it and put it
back on without the belt. The car certainly runs fine without it. And an
awful lot quieter too!
