Oh so true, Blake!
A prime example of this, took place last summer on this list, when that fake
MGC Sebring racer came up forsale on eBay. I spent many hours hours
researching and making phone calls, in order to get the testimony of the
car's history to provide concrete proof it was a fake (not to mention other
list members, like Kelvin confirming that the car was illegitimate). Search
the archives if you're interested in this specific example.
As a further note of interest, that same seller, has now "uncovered" two AC
sports cars and is claiming they both have competition heritage. It is so
difficult to prove that a car, with a largely unknown history such as these
two, have had competition history. Two kids racing it on the backroads
could qualify as competition history. But either way, deception is a part
of our hobby... the key is being knowledgeable and aware enough to guard
against becoming a victim of deception.
