My worst CONDITION car was my '72 VW Beetle (the car itself was okay).
The '72 did not have electric fans and modern heat - it got heat from
recirculating warmth from the exhaust pipe.
My exhaust pipe was rusted out. This had the following effects:
1) Noisy as hell
2) No valid exhaust pipe, therefore no heat
3) Exhaust was sucked up into the heating "system", filling the car with
exhaust
4) Forcing you to open the windows in frigid winter conditions so you could
breathe
This all came to a head one fateful trip to Canada (a hop across the border
to buy Canadian beer, actually); the exhaust broke at the heater pipe on
the coldest day of the year, filling the car with exhaust, forcing us to
drive in sub-zero weather with the windows down, just so we could
breathe. This also obligated to continuously scrape ice from the INSIDE of
the windshield while we drove.
Finally we had to sneak back into the reserve compound where my buddy was
stationed, because by the time we finally got back it was too late and we
had to scale the barbed-wire fence. But that's another story... :)
