All last year I ran on the track with 15" rims that were 5.5" wide.
Onto these I crammed (just) 205/60/15 tyres. They would have been more
comfortable on 6" wide rims and I would have been more comfortable on
14" rims.

I didn't have to flare the guards but under extreme cornering there was
some contact with the bodywork on the inside (leaving half-moon shaped
rubbing marks) at the rear and rub marks on the ends of the sway bar at
the front. Nothing too serious and no obvious damage to the tyres. On
14" rims it would have been even better.

With downward an sideways force of a couple of very fast corners you
would hear the rubbing (but only just over the engine noise) and you
learned to ignore it :-)

A panhard rod on the rear would probably have fixed this issue, too.

Driving on these wheels to and from the track (you try carrying a set of
these monsters in the car with you to change at the track:-) ... and
indeed I even did the 1,000 mile trip to an interstate meeting on these
big ones ... there were no problems at all except at low speed when
sometimes you felt like you were going to break the steering wheel doing
tight turns. Without power assistance they were very heavy to turn.

Oh yeah, I am now running the same make/model of tyre (love those
Bridgestone Potenzas) but 195/60 on 14" rims. Absolutely fantastic and
another second off my times :-)
