Oops, I forgot the sway bar! Yes, that does make a simple changeover more
difficult.......
However, there is also a problem with your Plan B. Unlike a "banjo" axle,
where the whole differential comes out as a unit (the "pumpkin"), the pinion
in a Salisbury axle stays in the case when you remove the differential gears
through the hole in the back. The inter-relation between the ring gear (on
the diff unit) and the pinion is critical. Simply changing the diff from one
axle to another might give major differences in clearance which would
result, at least, in a very noisy rear end or, at worst, gears that mesh so
tightly they tear the teeth off each other in a fairly short time.
So, the best option for you is to use the '74 axle complete but to cut the
swaybar brackets off the '79 axle housing and weld them onto the '74.
