Sorry Maynard, I gotta call you on this.  What are your sources for this
information.

My understanding, which may be erroneous, is that the front cross member
change was made to give improved clearance for the V8 oil pan on the MGBGT
V8.

The V8 bodyshell with it's modified mounting points was then used when the
Federal bumper height regulations came into being.  Which is such a blessing
for those of us shoving Rover motors into the beasts.

The engine mounting location may possibly be lower (especially with squishy
mountings) but the removal of the front sway bar and adding 70lbs on each
end of the car would have negated any positive changes.  I don't think at
that time the factory was very interested in the handling of the car.
