i have been told by more than one MG mechanic to set the timing on a 'B
by "bliping" the throttle up to about 4000 RPM and check that the total
advance w/ the vacume pipe _connected_ was no greater than 30 deg BTDC.
and then to retard it a bit if the engine "pinks" under load.
PS this works best if you have a timing light w/ a degree offset
adjustment.
