I just took the tach out a couple of weeks ago to clean it up, I hope I
didn't mess up the connectors (or something else for that matter). However,
senario one is in line with my symptoms.

Does the engine misfire in time with the tach malfunctions? If it
does, you likely have an ignition problem. If it doesn't, you likely
have a problem in the electronics in the tach.
When my '69 B acts up like that, I clean the bullet connectors at the
back of the tach. The ignition draws current throught the tach's pickup
loop, y'see.
