re:bloody breather gaskets

I assume you mean the side cover gaskets.  What you do is this:

Clean off all the old gasket material and use either carb cleaner or brake
cleaner to remove any old oil.  Take RTV and put a thin layer on the cover,
place the gasket on the RTV and let it set up some, then install.
