.max File Question - No LBC Content

Any of you computer guys out there know what a .max file format is?? My
brother (the NY firefighter) sent me some photos of the WTC site clean-up
that are in this format... I'm wondering if they are from a photo CD or
something, and no program I have opens them.... Google came up blank
too.... TIA....
