I know some of you have done the alternator conversion (like Larry). Two
possibilities I see on the Internet are to replace the Lucas alternator (or
generator) with a Delco or Bosch unit. It looks like more work,
particularly with the dog ears, for the Delco unit. The Delco unit also
looks bulkier from the pictures.
Any words of advice on one or the other? Is this a job that can be done by
a 17 year old? My son recently added on a bunch of high tech stereo gear on
his 65B (stereo, amplifier, gobs of speakers) - not that I endorse this
activity. And then shortly thereafter, the generator stopped working. I
cleaned the commuter but testing shows that the output is now about 1 volt,
indicating windings. Car is already converted to negative ground. With a
dead generator, it looks like a good time to convert over to a higher
powered alternator. Cheaper too. Just need some words of advice from those
that have been there and done that.
