The end-float is between the outer races and the inner races of each bearing
and hence the tapered rollers. The hub nut, washer, inner race of outer
bearing, shims, spacer, inner race of inner bearing and the stub axle
(located in that order) are tightened to between 40 and 70 lb. ft. and it is
this force that is said to give the added strength to the stub axle.
Varying the thickness of the shims varies the distance between the two inner
races, which as the rollers taper in towards each varies the clearance
between the races and the rollers of each bearing.
