Bad temp senders

Hi  list, I finally managed to get the bad temp sender out of my car. I 
replaced it with a new one but the gauge won't work. When I short the 
sending cable the gauge works fine.  What could be wrong? I purchased two 
new temp senders and they both don't work? is there any way to test these
