You can certainly do a base clear at home, as for forgiving, the base clear
is easier to fiv a blem from poor technique. As to the paint edges, that is
something that should be addressed before you paint. A good urethane primer
sealer should be used. Probably if you are using old single stage systems
you are probably using an old primer system too. Single stage laquer or
acrylic primer. These are prone to an effect called, die back. This is
caused by continued outgassing of the product after it has dried and been
finish coated. Ofted the finish looks good when you complete the job but
days later you see these blemishes. You didn't miss them, they weren't there
when you were cleaning the gun. A very unpleasant surprise.
