No first hand experiance with a transmission, but I have shipped tons of parts
with UPS.
Seems to me you drain it and stuff it in a box. In Denver, if you take it to
them, they want to inspect your packing methods. That means you have it packed,
but leave the box open. They take a look and tape it up. That way if there is
a problem, it's their problem, not yours.
