First, a question: What is your oil pressure, both at idle and
cruising?
Second, to determine whether the knock is bearing or valve related,
pull off each spark plug wire in turn, start the engine, and see if the
knock goes away. If it does, this is most likely a rod bearing problem
in that cylinder. If it doesn't go away, you have a valve/lifter
problem.
If the knock is VERY loud and hard, like a hammer hit on the engine,
don't bother with this test, just have it towed in to a good shop and
get your check book ready!
Unfortunately, there are "rebuilds", and there is "crap". A proper MGB
engine bottom half rebuild should cost at least $1000 for the machine
work alone: Resize, re-bush rods, re-size main bearing saddles, hone or
rebore cylinders, grind or polish the crank, new cam, rod and main
bearings, new or reground cam, new pistons/rings. Assembly will add
$250-$500 to that. Many folks just don't want to put this kind of money
into their "rebuilds".
