Hello list, I'm popping into this group to seek assistance on a pesky
problem with my 1974 1/2 MGB/GT. I have made a decision to sell this vehicle
but I can't proceed with that process until I solve a very big problem.
My car is acting like it has head-related issues. We have had very hot days
here in Kansas, over 100F, and after a bit of town driving I start getting a
very annoying miss when I start up from a traffic light. It seems to get
worse as I put my foot into the acceleration, better if I baby the
acceleration. A couple of nights ago I tried to take the warm vehicle to get
gas. Never made it. The car had no power, as if there was no oil in the
dashpots of the dual carbs. And when it died, it wouldn't restart until it
cooled down. Fuel pump works when you pull the line off the carb.
Checked all the usual things. Please note that I have driven this car for 13
years, and owned MGBs for 22 years in the role of daily drivers. So I'm not
new at this. My regular daily driver is an Austin Marina, (same engine) and
an Austin America. They have no heat issues.
Back to the GT. I recently rebuilt the carbs, SU fuel pump, swapped
distributor, etc. My gas tank isn't in the best shape, and had some rust
particles in the fuel, but I don't think its affecting this problem, since
the missing only occurs when the car is good and warm. Suspecting the loom I
even ran a cheater wire to the ignition on my 12 volt coil that needs no
ballast.
Any suggestions appreciated. I'm at the end of my rope. It's just not fun
anymore.
Thanks,
Scott
