anyone done this on a "collapsible" column? How tight should the puller

I just pulled the steering wheel off my '77 Midget to fix the horn contact.
The '77 has a collapsible column. The puller I used has nothing to "whack."
It is a harmonic balancer/steering wheel puller from Sears. I bolted it to
two of the wheel mounting bolt holes in the hub and tightened the center bolt
down against the top of the steering column. A quick shot of Busty, and it
came right off.
Maybe you are using a slide hammer type puller. Again, you will be pulling
up, so you won't compress the collapsible column. I think you have to drive
into a wall to collapse it.
