Gizmo: "Origin unknown" says my two large dictionaries!

I think I once heard it has an origin, but it was something like an
anacronym(?), as in SCUBA, or a military secret code, as in TANK.

Nubbins: Middle Low German 'knubbe', knot on a tree.

Our family, Scotch, Irish, English, Dutch, has used it for years in reference to
any underdeveloped or small fruit/grain.  "The corn crop was nothing but
nubbins." or "You left me nothing but nubbins to eat."

Are some LBC owners knackers? <GRIN>
