I was always told that as long as the crankshaft is turning, air andfuel will continue to be sucked into the cylinders. Not a problem normally, but since British engines periodically need to be decarbonized, perhaps it is hot "carbon" that is continuing to ignite the fuel, even after you shut of the ignition.
