Does the solenoid click when you turn the key? If yes, then the starter may
be jammed on something. If there is no click, then the solenoid is bad or is
not getting voltage.
You can try something a little dangerous. Take the dist cap off or pull out
the coil wire so the car won't start, then use a jumper cable to connect the
starter terminal directly to the pos. terminal of the battery (in a neg.
earth car). Clip the cable onto the starter terminal and just touch it to
the battery. MAKE SURE NOTHING ELSE TOUCHES THE CLAMP! If the starter
doesn't turn then, the starter is definitely the problem.
I had a problem with my starter when I replaced it. (Actually, I had a
problem with the mechanic...ME!) I turned the nut on the starter terminal
too tight, which twisted the terminal. The conductor inside the starter was
then twisted and shorted out to the case of the starter. If that may be the
problem, take the starter out, take the end plate off, and figure out how to
untwist the conductor so it doesn't short.
Reassembly is the reverse...etc., but you have to hold the brushes apart
somehow to get them back on the commutator. It is a PITA, but you have done
enough work on your car that you will be able to figure it out.
Good luck,
