Steve;
I think you have some other problem if your battery is running down.  I have 
this type of radio in my MGB and it sat for 2 months this winter in the 
garage.  When I went out to use it I had pleanty of battery to start the car. 
 These are also common in boats which often sit for weeks w/o running and 
there is no related battery run down.
