I'm assuming this is the black plastic part of the damper piston that screws
into the top of the dashpot cover.  When you open the throttle the dashpot
tries to lift and the damper retards it, which has the effect of trying to
push the black plastic part out of the dashpot cover by stripping the
threads, and in your case has probably done so (MG Metro Turbo dampers are
held in place with a metal clip because of the increased pressures on that
car).
