Max - interaction between lights on a cluster (sometimes lights on other
corners will glow dimply as well) indicates a bad ground to the cluster.
AFAIK all rear clusters (and chrome bumper front units) do not have a
dedicated ground connection but rely on scratching through the paint on the
back of the panel, I am amazed they work as well as they do. The number
plate lights that mount on the overiders are the same, but these have about
four metal-to-metal bolted connection before they get to the body. When I
restored my roadster they would not work so I ran in a ground connection
rather than start scratching my precious paint. At least the rear cluster
grounding points are in the boot and (hopefully) dry, but I painted round
the fixing holes with Waxoyl first anyway.

Cheers,
PaulH.
