This sounds like the later tube/Salisbury axle. I used two tapered wedges
to get the hub off, then after I had removed the bearing cap and backplate
bolts put the hub back on loosely and used the tapered wedges to get the
half-shaft and bearing out of the casing. I found the shaft came out with
less effort than the hub came off originally, and stripped the complete axle
on the ground i.e. off the car. Maybe the tapered wedges, hitting first one
then the other placed on opposite sides of the hub, made it easier than a
straight pull.
