Fireing starter

Hi list, I am slowly going through my cross check before I fire my baby up.

I installed the battery today and when I connected the negative terminal I 
heard the starter motor spining?

Took the neg lead off on the double. The key was not even in the ignition!

Any ideas whats wrong with my wireing? Thanks, Enrique
