<Does anyone have hands on experience with installing a 5 main 1800 onto a
non-synchro (preferably Magnette w/top mounted slave) gearbox?>
Easy - use the original gearbox (better, as the top mounted slave is a pain
to deal with in a trans swap), and drill the 5 main flywheel to take the 3
main clutch, either spring or diaphragm (be sure to use the right front trans
cover so the fulcrum point of the throw out lever is right).
The simplest would be to use the Maggot clutch on the 5 main flywheel.
As you noted, just have your rear plate machined to take the 5 main seal.
