I am English and work in the US so have done this a few times.  I was 
charged about 8 pounds a few years ago to bank a foreign cheque in the UK at 
a Nat West bank.  Is that cheaper than sending the cash Western Union?

I would ignore the shipping and tax issue since he is not a business.
