wheel bearings

I have recently purchased a 67 B-GT and it seems like the front wheels are
rocking on their bearings a very little bit.  I was wondering if it is possible
to just remove a shim from the bearing to remove some of that slop instead of
replacing the whole bearing.
  I am
planning a cross country MG trip in my GT and my friends Midget as soon as this
semester is over and would like to to get that taken care of.
