Well I can only answer for my state (TN) but I will give you the advise I
was given.
First it will depend on how long you have owned the car. If you have owned
the car a while, you can sign an affidavit that you have owned the car for x
number of years and apply for a title.
If you are just getting the car and have no title, you will probably have to
go a title service that will issue a tag receipt from a state like Alabama
which has no titles for cars built before 1975. You would actually
transfer ownership to them, they would in turn "re-sell" you the car and
then you would have tag receipt (AL does not issue titles for cars built
before 75) and you could register the car. This usually runs around $175
and the services advertise in Hemmings, etc..
Talk with your county tag folks - they might be able to help you if they are
of the helping nature.
