I used to use it all the time in my MGB-GT on cold winter days and I didn't 
know a thing about it being detrimental to the car.  The only thing wrong 
with it I've ever heard is that the need for it only evidences some other 
problem, a problem which may be detrimental to the car if permitted to 
continue.
